The firm was founded by three former senior executives of Sanlam Investments: its Chief Executive Officer, its Chief Operating and Financial Officer, and the Chief Executive and Chief Investment Officer of Sanlam Multi Manager International. Between them sits more than six decades of experience running equity, fixed interest, multi-asset, hedge fund and private market portfolios at one of Africa's largest asset managers.

MidSquare applies that same stewardship to digital assets: rigorous research, disciplined portfolio construction, and deliberate risk management, within a regulated South African structure. All three founders serve on the investment committee and remain personally accountable for every investment decision the firm makes.

The firm is majority-owned by its founders, who invest their own capital alongside clients. Fairtree Capital acquired a minority interest in December 2024.
